South American death metal pioneers PENTAGRAM (Chile) have released a cover of Chilean folk musician Violeta Parra on the centenary of her birth. The song is an instrumental piece titled “Anticueca #2”. The PENTAGRAM version can be heard at the following YouTube link.
Band leader Anton Reisenegger (guitar and vocals) had the following to say about it: “We started working on this Violeta Parra cover over a year or two ago, but for logistical reasons it got delayed, until we finally finished it coinciding with the 100th anniversary of her birth.”
“We made this cover out of respect and admiration”, continues Reisenegger. “Apart from her more popular songs, Violeta Parra wrote absolutely incredible instrumental music, a lot of which is quite dark. I have always thought the music of PENTAGRAM has a component of Chilean folk, such as the use of the 3/4 time signature, so doing this cover felt very natural. And I think you can definitely hear the parallels.”
The cover of “Anticueca #2” will be part of an upcoming PENTAGRAM album titled “Past, Present and Future”, which will include a brand new original song, a new version of a song from a 1985 demo, as well as sessions the band has recorded for radio and television, among other material. The album will be released in 2018 by German label Cyclone Empire Records.
